The strategic direction of Necropolis is overseen by a voluntary Trust (Board). The Trust is responsible to the Minister of Health and must ensure the good governance of the cemeteries entrusted to its care.
Members of the Trust are recruited through a publicly advertised process which leads to appointment by the Governor in Council.
The term of appointment is five years. Members may seek to be reappointed. In effect members may be likened to the directors or board of a company.
As such, our Trust Members are responsible for the largest not for profit cemetery and crematorium operation within Australia.
These volunteers give willingly of their time and accumulated expertise. They serve the community by ensuring the successful ongoing operation of Necropolis and hold the Chief Executive Officer accountable for the performance of the business.

It is no accident that Necropolis has developed a reputation world wide as Australia’s leading provider of cemetery, cremation and memorialisation services.
The vision of the founding fathers in selecting and developing the Springvale site created the basis for growth.
The ongoing success of the organisation reflects most favourably upon the performance of successive Trust Members, management and staff.
In effect they have:
• created a world class botanical cemetery environment at Springvale Botanical Cemetery
•
cross subsidised the ongoing operation of two of Melbourne’s historic, closed cemeteries
•
ensured the ongoing operation of Dandenong Cemetery.
Necropolis recognises that it is inevitable that in approximately 40 years even the Springvale site may run out of available space for graves.
The ongoing revenue that will continue to be generated from cremation and memorialisation will not be enough, by itself, to fund all four cemeteries.
As a consequence Necropolis is committed to:
• Setting aside funds
By accumulating and investing prudently Necropolis is building a financial reserve which will generate funds for
future operations.
•
Sustainable business practices
As a socially responsible organisation Necropolis recognises the need to consider the impact of its operation
upon the environment and the world in which we live.
