Melbourne Mausoleum
In 1994 there was a change in Victorian law to allow above ground interments. The first of the two mausolea at Melbourne General Cemetery, the Melbourne Mausoleum, opened in 1998. It provided the local community with access to interment in an otherwise full cemetery. It also provided much needed income.

Gatehouse Mausoleum
The Gatehouse Mausoleum, designed by Harmer Architecture opened in 2005. Comprising four impressive galleries the building was the recipient of an Institutional Architecture Award.

Prime Minister’s Garden
In 1992 the then Premier, Jeff Kennett and his close political associate, Ron Walker, became aware of the fact that a memorial had not been established for the late Sir Robert Menzies. A Prime Minister’s Garden at Melbourne General Cemetery was subsequently established and the cremated remains of Sir Robert and Dame Pattie Menzies interred.
Additional monuments have been added over the years which commemorate Sir John Grey Gorton, the Hon Harold Holt and Dame Zara Bate. A decorative wall recognising all Australian Prime Ministers who have held office is located at the rear of the garden. |

Ongoing Care
The dedicated and diligent administration over recent years has resulted in Melbourne General Cemetery being restored to its former glory.
