Important Information for Cemetery Visitors
Melbourne General Cemetery has rules in place to ensure that the cemetery remains a peaceful and dignified place of remembrance.
The roads within the cemetery are public roads and thus the same traffic rules apply. The maximum speed limit of 40 kilometers is enforced. Police patrol from time to time.
Visitors must dress and behave respectably.
To assist in maintaining the beauty of the grounds please use the bins provided.
The damage/removal of plants is not permitted.
Bird life and other animals are not to be fed or interfered with in any way.
Dogs are permitted within the grounds on the condition that they are held on a leash, are fully controlled at all times and their excrement is removed.
Making any kinds of alterations to a grave or memorial site is not permitted unless prior approval has been granted by Melbourne General Cemetery.
Registered Monumental Masons with approved passes are the only people permitted to carry out monumental work.
Touting (business promotion) of any kind is not permitted within the cemetery grounds. Touting is illegal – it is in breach of the law.
To preserve the cemetery grounds and to reduce the risk of injury, ornaments, artificial flowers, glass jars, tins and other non approved receptacles are not permitted.
Warning: Please do not leave valuable items at burial or cremation memorial sites. Unfortunately, thefts do occur within the grounds. Any items left within the grounds are at the owner’s risk. Melbourne General Cemetery takes no responsibility for items left within the grounds. Also, please do not leave valuable items (e.g. wallets, hand bags, phones etc.) in your car as theft from a locked car could occur.
