About Melbourne

Melbourne General Cemetery was proclaimed in 1852. The first burial was of John Burnett, a colonial merchant (after whom Burnett Street in St Kilda is named), on the 28th May 1853.


Melbourne General Cemetery - 2004

Covering 43 hectares (107 acres), this historically rich cemetery is located in the heart of Carlton.

Offering burial, cremation and mausolea services, the cemetery caters for Melbourne’s multicultural community.

Melbourne General Cemetery is administered by the Trustees of the Necropolis Springvale. Necropolis also administers Dandenong, Springvale Botanical and St Kilda cemeteries.
